Never let reality stifle your dreams... painted on the wall of a camp site in The Gambia where I stayed at the completion of the trip. One evening I was relaxing at home, glancing through the local rag after a hard days teaching of my little darlings, when I saw a photograph of two young men standing next to a battered white van with silly grins on their faces. They were about to drive this Old Banger from Paignton, Devon, across France and Spain, into Morocco, Mauritania, across a section of the Western Sahara, into Senegal and, finally, The Gambia where they would auction the car for charity. And in that instant I said to myself, Im going to do that! And I did...This is a slightly expanded account of the trip taken from the diary I kept along the way. It was one of the best adventures I have ever undertaken and, I hope, it will send a message to all you armchair adventurers out there: Next time you look at pictures of young (or old) men and women planning an adventure and say wistfully to yourself: I wish I could do that... how about, instead, crying out while you leap off your chair, Im going to do that! - and then DO it!About the Author:Lawrence Bransby is an award-winning author of several novels.
